Description

L292 Switch-Mode DC Motor Driver IC

Product Description

The L292 Switch-Mode DC Motor Driver IC is a monolithic motor driver designed to control DC motors in applications requiring regulated bidirectional motor drive. Manufactured by STMicroelectronics, the L292 integrates the motor-driving and control circuitry into a 15-lead Multiwatt 15 package, providing a compact solution for DC motor control systems.

The L292 operates from a single 18V to 36V DC supply and provides a driving capability of up to 2A. Its switching frequency can operate from 1kHz to 30kHz, making the device suitable for switch-mode motor-control applications. The IC incorporates internal current-sensing and control circuitry, while external components can be used to adjust the loop gain and configure the motor-control circuit.

The device provides two logic inhibit inputs that control the output stage. According to the datasheet truth table, normal operation occurs when the two inhibit inputs are in the appropriate low/high combination, while the other combinations disable the output stage. This allows external digital circuitry or a control system to enable or disable motor drive operation.

The L292 is capable of driving current in both positive and negative directions, with the datasheet specifying an output capability of ±2A under the stated test conditions. This makes the device suitable for bidirectional DC motor drive configurations. The output stage also incorporates current sensing, while external sensing resistors are used as part of the current-control loop.

Thermal protection is integrated into the device to help protect the IC during excessive thermal conditions. The datasheet specifies a maximum total power dissipation of 25W at a case temperature of 75°C, while the junction and storage temperature range extends from -40°C to +150°C. Proper heat sinking and thermal design are required when operating the driver near its maximum power capability.

The L292 was originally designed to operate as part of the L290/L291/L292 motor positioning system, where it could be controlled by a microprocessor. It can also be used separately as a DC motor driver in suitable circuit configurations.

Note: STMicroelectronics and major distributors currently list the L292 as an obsolete/discontinued device. Therefore, availability and exact package marking should be verified when sourcing this component.
